Beschreibung

Die Galleria Colonna, ein Meisterwerk des römischen Barock, wurde Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts von Kardinal Girolamo I. Colonna und seinem Neffen Lorenzo Onofrio in Auftrag gegeben und 1700 von Philipp II. Colonna eingeweiht. Ursprünglich von Antonio del Grande entworfen, wurde sie später von Bernini, Paolo Schor und Carlo Fontana erweitert.

Die Galerie wurde zur Feier des christlichen Sieges in der Schlacht von Lepanto (1571) eingerichtet, wobei der Kommandant Marcantonio II Colonna im Großen Saal und im Saal der Schlachtsäule dargestellt ist.

Die Sammlung umfasst Werke von Ghirlandaio, Palma dem Älteren, Bronzino, Tintoretto, Pietro da Cortona, Annibale Carracci(Der Bohnenfresser), Guercino, Albani, Muziano und Guido Reni, während die Deckenfresken von Gherardi, Coli, Ricci und Chiari die Rolle Colonnas bei Lepanto würdigen.
