What to expect
This is all about the evolution of the Singapore home. As the population grew, there was a housing shortage. And the government had to build and relocated people from slums and squatter living conditions to new high rise apartment flats, known to Singaporeans as HDB flats. Learn about Singapore’s first homes - shophouses. What do they look like and what’s the story behind shophouses? Why the exodus from shophouse to apartment flats? When did this happen? Today, HDBs are regarded as enviable top-of-the-line homes.
Visit a typical housing neighbourhood to learn how local Singaporeans go about their daily lives - from supermarkets to hawker centres, from void decks to fitness amenities. The highlight will be the home visit to a host family. This is a rather intimate meeting with a Singaporean family, where you learn about their lives, their daily chores and have a no-holds-barred session where nothing is off-limits.
