What to expect

Historic ruins, beaches and swimming in underground caves make this an action-packed morning of discovery. A guided tour of Tulum is followed by a visit to a traditional Maya community. What's more, you'll get to take a dip in a cenote, too. Benito, one of our local guides, says, "most of Tulum dates from the two centuries before Spanish colonisation, so it's a final snapshot of a doomed civilisation. Among the many things you'll learn is the symbolism behind the deities carved into the temples."

First up, explore the remains of the Maya city of Tulum. Your expert guide will show you temples of the Frescoes, the Descending God, the Winds and more. And then there's El Castillo pyramid, whose clifftop location overlooking the Caribbean saw it double as a lighthouse. Nowadays, it's made for Instagram – it's the most photographed location in the Riviera Maya. Gustavo, another of our local guides, says, ‘Tulum is that perfect balance between culture and nature – just look at all the iguanas you'll see lazing around. The ancient Maya appreciated this, and each area represented one of the elements – earth, water, wind and fire.'

Then we'll take some time to look around a Maya village and meet some members of the community. We'll find out about the traditions and customs of the village, before finishing up with a swim in a cenote. These freshwater sinkholes were sacred to the ancient Maya. A bit of snorkelling in this hallowed cavern is the ideal way to round off your experience.

We’re on our fourth TUI holiday and booked the Tulum tour expecting a quality experience. The guide focused only on Italian guests, gave poor explanations, was dismissive, and then read our “anonymous” feedback and made a sarcastic remark, leaving us uncomfortable. The tour fell far below expectations. We won’t book or recommend TUI trips again and request compensation.

We loved our guide Nadia! She was very very friendly and attentive, taking care of the whole group and making the experience feel personal. It was all super fun, even in the heat we had lots of breaks in the shade and she always found a cool spot to tell us about the ruins. I liked the fact she used the time on the coach to talk to us and make it interesting and informative rather than just a boring coach trip. Everything was explained clearly and we knew what we were doing and when.

I was a little nervous before embarking on the trip but the tour guide and driver were both lovely, the trip was well planned and ran to time. We felt safe and our belonging were safe also at all times which was great. The only improvement would be to share the restrictions of the archaeological area of Tulum beforehand as we didn’t know we couldn’t take plastics.

Enjoyed the trip overall. As we were first to be picked up, it took 3.5 hours to get there, with picking people up along the way & then lengthy return journey. Also the lunch wasn't vegetarian, I did ask & was told yes it was. It contained meat.

This was approximating on false advertising as one could not help feeling that this was one long contrived hustle. £245 for 3 persons. However, nowhere is there mention of £40 per person 'local tax' which our tour guide sheepishly sprung on us at arrival to the destination. Secondly, there is NO lunch provided. At every point of this trip you are being prompted to tip someone including the tour guide. This was a con.

The ruins at Tulum were very interesting to walk around and true visit to the modern Mayan community was equally interesting thanks to our informative guides.
