What to expect

The past comes to life in Syracuse – a city packed with classical heritage as well as flamboyant Sicilian Baroque architecture. You'll visit the Greek theatre, go into the Ear of Dionysius and explore Ortygia island, the heart of the old town and location of Baroque gems such as the cathedral. Dino, one of our expert local guides, says "the whole point of this tour is to give you the best snapshot look at Syracuse's history and culture in one day. By the end of it, you'll know the city and its heritage inside and out."

With more than 2,700 years of history behind it, Syracuse is one of Sicily's most fascinating cities. Your journey through time kicks off at the Archaeological Park in the west of the city. Discover the Greek Theatre, which held 15,000 spectators in its heyday, and still awes despite the ravages of time. There's also the Altar of Hiero – a massive sacrificial slab – the Ear of Dionysius as well as the Roman amphitheatre.

You'll then cross the bridge to Ortygia island. Its labyrinthine streets are packed with churches, palaces and castles. A guided tour will take in all the top attractions, including the cathedral. You'll then have a couple of hours of free time to explore at your own pace.

Alex our guide was brilliant, he made sure that I was ok after each part of our experience, which when you have chronic fatigue syndrome, is very important to myself and my wife. There wasn't anything that we could find fault with, we enjoyed having time for ourselves to go off & explore plus good quality time with Alex our guide. Alex engaged excellently with all in a friendly & welcoming manner.

The whole experience was a pleasure to partake in. The guides were well informed and had good methods of communication. We were in awe of Fabio our guide and his ability to flit between Italian, English and German whilst maintaining the nuances in all languages. The only minor blot eas the roadworks over which even Tui had no control.

Yksi paikallisoppaistamme, Rosaria, kertoo: "Palermo on saaren suurin kaupunki, jossa pääset näkemään Sisilian vilkkaan puolen. Monreale taas on pienempi vuoristokaupunki, joka tuo kivan kontrastin kierrokseen. Samalla vierailemaan muutamassa todella uskomattomassa maamerkissä."Ensimmäinen pysähdyspaikkasi on Monrealen kaupunki, joka sijaitsee Monte Caputon rinteillä, 764 metriä korkealla huipulla Palermon lähellä. Kaupungista avautuu näkymä Conca d'Oro -laaksoon, joka tunnetaan ympäri Sisiliaa appelsiini-, oliivi- ja manteliviljelmistään – kaikki nämä näkyvät upeasti Monrealen näköalapaikoilta. Kaupungin ylpeydenaihe on Monrealen 900 vuotta vanha katedraali, joka hurmaa pronssiovillaan, kullalla maalatuilla sisätiloillaan ja normannityylisellä ulkosivullaan. Katedraalin sisäänpääsy sisältyy hintaan, ja oppaasi kertoo sinulle hieman sen historiasta.Täältä suuntaat Palermoon, jossa tutustut oppaan johdolla kaupungin kapeisiin kujiiin kävelykierroksella. Kauniita aukioita, temppeleitä, suihkulähteitä – näet kaikenlaista leppoisan kierroksen aikana. Lopuksi sinulla on hieman vapaa-aikaa kierrellä omin päin, ennen kuin palaat majapaikkaasi.

Guided Corleone mafia resistance tour with lunch

Corleone was once a town once infamous for its mafia ties, but today it is a beacon of resistance and justice. The panoramic drive through the mountains sets the stage for an enlightening day ahead. Vincenzo, one of our expert local guides says, “This fascinating, insightful tour is designed to educate and debunk Hollywood's glamorised portrayal of mafia life, offering instead a genuine glimpse into the courageous fight against organised crime. This is an important tour for our town." First up is The Godfather's House Museum, a grand 19th-century residence that takes you on a journey through time, exploring the birth of both the mafia and anti-mafia movements. Next, delve deeper into this complex history at the CIDMA Antimafia Museum, home to an extensive collection of documents and exhibits chronicling the dark past and brave resistance against the mafia. After a walking tour of Corleone's historic streets, you'll be whisked off to a local restaurant near the Royal Palace of Ficuzza for a classic Italian lunch, surrounded by natural beauty. Finally, sit back and relax on your return journey to Cefalù, taking with you a deeper understanding of Corleone's transformation from a mafia stronghold to a place that local people are proud to call home, a place with a future free from the clutches of organized crime.
